Leisurely start this morning as we’re leaving the luxury of fitted sheets, all you can eat breakfast and an en-suite bathroom.
Sue had to go for her 7:30, 5k run again this morning and managed to find the Chinese temple in the Englischer Garten.
After breakfast we packed our bags and took a light load down to see if Ollie was still talking to us.
We loaded the van outside the front of the hotel and stuck the bikes on the back.
The hotel was well worth the money. About £50 a head per night including a substantial all you could eat breakfast, very clean, good sized room, good transport connections and food that was more than edible.
The local REWE was also a fave!
We’re on the road again! (Donkey to Shrek)
Leaving Munich we stopped just off the M8 on the outskirts of Munich at a REWE, to be fleeced by their extortionate prices again – no salad pick and mix bar though, it was empty ☹️.
Then we just popped into the Aldi next door and the REWE bottle shop. We also stopped at DM to find a wrist brace cos my decorators-RSI is playing up again.
Then it was off on the M8 south towards Saltzberg.
We’d only been going 20 or 30 minutes before we stopped at a services for a wee and a coffee. Coffee Fellows was probably the most expensive coffee we’d had on the trip… but we’re worth it!
The loos in the service station caused quite a bit a chortle… self cleaning seats!
Our service station stop also corresponded with us hitting the back of a traffic jam. Probably 10km of holdup so one lane could be closed to mow the verges. Gotta love the disruption that causes!
It was then just a case of trotting off the 120km or so to a small village in the Berchtesgaden valley called Winkl.
As we got closer and closer to our destination, the hills loomed taller and taller. Eventually we turned off the M8 and headed into the hills.
Once we got to the campsite there was a bit of mix up with the booking – but probably in a good way. We may have inadvertently booked 4 nights instead of 3. But judging by the campsite so far, we might be quite happy to stay an extra night.
We also paid a bit extra for a shady spot, which turned out to be next to a stream. Just right for cleaning the van mat that had been festering in the van, wet, for the past 3 days – yeuk!
While the stream is crystal clear, it is very noisy. But with the temperatures set to get into the low 30’s this weekend, we will probably be very glad of the cool water.
We’ve got an early start tomorrow (Friday) as we wanted to beat the crowds to the Eagles Nest outside of Berchtesgaden. We have a 9:20 bus up to the site and an 11:00 bus back down. So we’ve decided to take the van to the bus starting point in Obersalzburg and that’s a 40 minute drive away. So we’re aiming to be away from the campsite (leaving the bikes, tables and chairs) by about 8! No run for Sue in the morning… and no cooked brecky for me! ☹️
Odo is now at 1282.
